AI is Coming for Our Jobs...Kinda Not Really

Written by Ashlee Rolkowski | 1/9/23 2:49 PM

Robots are coming for our jobs.

I've heard this sentiment over and over in the past few months. The fear of robots replacing us isn't new, but the conversation has resurfaced with new advancements being made in Artificial Intelligence. Every day I scroll through LinkedIn I see at least one discussion about ChatGPT and whether or not it will replace copy writers or even just reduce the need for them.

The truth is that AI will continue to change how we function in our roles, in the same way that the invention of modern machinery changed how we build houses and how we package food. The need for humans in those jobs is still there, but those people are doing different tasks than they did before.

That happens for several reasons, but one of them comes down to the human tendency to want more. For instance, if I got a robot vacuum, I'd replace the time I spent vacuuming with another task. My time doesn't become unneeded, I just find another way to fill it. There's always more, and we'll continue to pursue ways to get more, to do more, forever.

AI might make our jobs easier or take over tedious tasks in sales and marketing roles, but it won't eliminate the need for us. Instead, it will free us up to do more.

Will AI replace us? Nope. But it will change how we do our jobs.
